Alan R Sawyer, a leader in the study of Peruvian antiquities, recounts the history of archaeological excavation in this extremely arid region and the discovery there of textiles in a remarkable state of preservation. The author discusses how the early inhabitants of the Nasca and Ica valleys sought water, power, and life through their religion of riverine gods and trophy head deities. Beginning with single agricultural deities on the Cabildo gravelot sampler, this study proceeds to complex groups of ten gods with animal, vegetal, bird, and marine motifs, in vivid block-color embroidery. The styles and techniques of needlework excavated in the Nasca areas are then distinguished from that of the neighboring Paracas people in the north, who shaled the trophy-head religion. Alan Sawyers thorough research brings together textiles, ceramics, and gold from museums and private collections to illuminate these masterpieces of needlework from nearly 2000 years ago, suggesting for the first time that the more amply-documented Paracas textiles may have been influenced by the dynamic Early Nasca culture. Textile borders with delightful three-dimensional figures worked in cross-knit looping demonstrate the Early Nasca love of ornament. Citing a little-known excavation on the far south coast of Peru, the author questions the source of this technique in which the ancient needleworkers expressed themselves so eloquently.
